Dayton Progress Celebrates National Manufacturing Day
October 18, 2012
Dayton Progress Corporation participated in National Manufacturing Day on October 5th by opening its doors and hosting educational open houses. Presentations on careers in manufacturing followed by plant tours were made to high school students and their parents, teachers, counselors and school administrators. The presentations and tours ran non-stop between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
Schools which brought groups of students included West Carrollton HS, Centerville HS, Greene County Career Center, and Wright State University. In addition to school groups some students attended with their parents. Faculty and administrators from Butler Tech & Career Development also participated.
Government dignitaries, including State senator Bill Beagle and Kettering City Councilman Ashley Webb also participated in the activities.
Visitors experienced a modern manufacturing facility, saw what Dayton Progress manufactures and learned what skills and background are needed to qualify for today’s excellent high-paying manufacturing jobs.
”Manufacturing is alive and well in the Dayton region, with 2,400 manufacturers employing more than 100,000 people” said Alan Shaffer, president and CEO of Dayton Progress, one of the largest of the Dayton-area manufacturers. “Careers in manufacturing are some of the highest paying of all jobs that do not require a college degree, as well as having top opportunities for those having a college degree. In fact, last year the average manufacturing job paid more than the average American earned with a 4-year degree. Unfortunately, manufacturing career opportunities are not often highlighted in either news media or by our secondary schools.”
