Presto Black cold blackening produces a uniform depth of blackness and corrosion resistance that is the ideal finish for oil and gas drilling components. Without the hazards of the hot oxide process, Presto Black is a fast, economical and safe room temperature process that provides high corrosion resistance tested for up to 1,200 hours humidity exposure. With a uniform .000030 inch (1 micron) thickness, the porous crystalline structure of the Presto Black finish makes it an excellent absorbent base for a rust preventative topcoat for extra corrosion protection without chipping or peeling. Presto Black is recommended for blackening cold and hot rolled steels, alloy steels, tool steels, as well as cast iron, forged steels and powdered metal. (It will not blacken stainless steel). The Presto Black process is ideal for both large and small parts held in storage and shipping then put into service corrosion free.
The fast, 15 minute Presto Black process makes it suitable for any quantity of parts, from prototypes, short part runs to long runs including just in time finishing programs. Operators and managers quickly become comfortable with the system’s simple operation and maintenance.
Presto Black operates with zero discharge of heavy metals to the drain using the Birchwood Technologies Ion Exchange System. It cleans and purifies the process rinse waters so they can be re-used rather than sent to the drain. Once available to large companies only, this technology is low cost and routinely utilized on process lines of all sizes with excellent success. Presto Black is available for use in existing tank lines or in one of Birchwood Technologies space saving, modular tank systems in sizes from 40 gallon, 100 gallon and larger. They can handle virtually any finishing volume and part size including those with integrated automated part handling.
