After receiving Nadcap accreditation last year, Forest City Gear began providing magnetic particle inspection (MPI) on site, rather than outsourcing to a third-party provider. MPI is a nondestructive test employed to identify surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities. Offering MPI onsite has shortened order lead time significantly, most notably for customers in the aerospace industry.

The American Gear Manufacturers Association’s (AGMA) Motion + Power Technology Expo (MPT Expo) hosted 2,268 attendees and 163 exhibitors last week at the Huntington Place Convention Center in Detroit, Michigan. A good 20 years have passed since the web-based calculation software eAssistant saw the light of day in the digital world. The Additive Manufacturer Green Trade Association (AMGTA), a global advocacy group focused on promoting sustainable additive manufacturing (AM) industry practices, announced today the preliminary results of a life-cycle analysis study titled “Comparative Life-Cycle Assessment: Comparison of Casting vs Binder Jetting for an Industrial Part.” The study, commissioned by the AMGTA and conducted by the Yale School of the Environment (YSE) in partnership with Desktop Metal, a global leader in AM technologies for mass production, and Trane Technologies, a global climate innovator, analyzed a steel scroll chiller in an HVAC system from Trane to determine the comparative manufacturing impact of binder jet 3D printing versus traditional metal casting. The preliminary results confirmed a dramatic 38 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the binder jetting process primarily driven by reduced energy demand during the production phase.

Solar Atmospheres of California (SCA) successfully installed a brand new 14-foot-long car bottom Air Furnace with a total load capacity of up to 30,000 pounds. The furnace was surveyed in accordance with AMS2750 and is uniform within ±10°F (Class 2). The furnace has a working zone that is 60-inches square by 168 inches long and handles a workload up to 30,000 pounds.
