Sustainability is part of Ovako's DNA. It is integrated into everything the company does. Ovako's steel production is based on recycled steel scrap and Nordic fossil-free electricity, and Ovako already has a world-leading low carbon footprint – 80% lower than the global average. Most of its residual products are reused, and are applied in areas such as building resilient roads. Through continuous improvements to the production process, Ovako’s environmental impact is being constantly reduced and the company is always striving to cut the emissions from product manufacturing.
“Sustainability is an integral part of our business, and our solid efforts are paying off. In 2019, we hit our target to reduce CO2 emissions by 30%. But we are not satisfied yet, and we are continuing on our journey together with our customers, for a sustainable future with clean steel,” says Katarina Hundermark, head of sustainability and safety at Ovako.
During the year, Ovako will talk about the work it is doing to contribute to a more sustainable steel industry based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Ovako supports the UN’s Global Sustainable Development Goals and has identified the areas where the company can contribute.
