Peter E. Chapin graduated from The Pennsylvania State University (Penn
State) in 1994 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has been working in the gear industry for over
22 years. The first six years were spent at J.I. Case (Case Tractor/CNH) in Racine, WI, as a manufacturing engineer of both gear production and general machining, including stints as Production Supervisor and Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor. Chapin has worked for almost 16 years as an Application Engineer at The Gleason
Works, currently serving as Lead Application Engineer of Gleason's Cylindrical Application Engineering Department in Rochester, NY.
This proposed standard would not make any recommendations
regarding the required quality for any application. The
intent is to establish standard pre-finish quality classes for typical
finishing operations, which only include the inspection elements
that are important to properly evaluate pre-finish gear
quality as it applies to the finishing operation. It would be the
responsibility of the manufacturing/process engineer, quality
engineer, or other responsible individual to establish the
required pre-finish quality class for their application.
