Since I have had the privilege of visiting numerous gear plants and research centers in the U.S., as well as 170 in 33 countries, and I closely watch the progression of technology, I wanted to share my observations about some technological advancements. For the purpose of this article, I will focus on three key areas: Robotics, Machine Tools, and Heat Treating.
The two ZFA series gear grinders are designed to perform high-speed and high-precision finish machining on gears. The two models are each designed for a different gear size range, with ZFA160 capable of handling gears with an external diameter of up to 160 mm, and ZFA260 accommodating gears with an external diameter of up to 260 mm. Capable of meeting the increasingly sophisticated users’ needs, both ZFA160 and ZFA260 can mass-produce gears with a gear accuracy level equivalent to ISO 3 (JIS level N3).

The facility stretches on like the Army’s warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with everything from gear cutting to heat treat, gear grinding to inspection, all under one roof. Gear Technology regularly covers machine tools, often referred to as “mother machines” due to their role in producing other machines, which serve as the cornerstone of industrial civilization by cutting or shaping metal. Think of all the gears in the machine tools that not only cut and polish gears but are indispensable for manufacturing a wide range of goods, with nearly every product being created either directly using machine tools or through machines manufactured using these tools.
There are many key performance gains when retrofitting a gear-cutting machine originating from the 1960s and 1970s. First, it can be noted that the new retrofitted CNC machine performs the same machining operations as the conventional mechanical machine, but - quite clearly - with an exponentially higher output. This is thanks to a reduction in set-up and production time and with a significantly higher quality of the finished gear.

Machining the teeth of a rotor shaft for electric cars has demanding machining requirements. Very few other applications place such high demands as transmission components. The very quiet motor requires the highest surface finishes so that disturbing running noises do not occur. In addition, the number of units in e-mobility is greatly increasing, which is an additional challenge for the mechanical engineering involved. FANUC demonstrates mobile machine tending. This mobile manipulator solution is produced by Capriol and features a FANUC CRX-20iA/L collaborative robot integrated with an OTTO 100 Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR). The mobile manipulator demonstrated autonomous, on-demand tending of a ROBODRILL vertical machining center, feeding blanks into the machine via a magazine and removing machined parts via a basket. The machined parts are then washed and dried in a separate washer station and new blanks are kitted into a magazine, ready for the next cycle.
